Pet and Animal Care - Week 4 Friday 23rd May 2014

This week the children learned all about tortoises and how to handle and care for them. The children were very lucky because Mrs Birch brought her pet tortoise George into school. They had a chance to hold George and help to feed him with some juicy lettuce leaves. They looked carefully at the tortoise and then made their own models using play dough. The story this week was called The Tortoise and the Hare.

They had a really great time and even Mr Whitehead  couldn't resist and joined in with the fun!

Pet and Animal Care - Week 3 Friday 16th May 2014

This week the children were learning how to look after a pet rabbit. Mrs Pickard very kindly brought her rabbit called Henry into school. The children looked at the different types of food he likes to eat, that also keep him healthy. They held him carefully whilst they gave him a little stroke and brushed his fur. He really liked this and happily sat there being pampered and groomed!  They children looked carefully at Henry and they drew a picture of him. They took him outside in his carrier to the grass area. They all helped to build a pen for Henry so that he could have a run around on the grass. He really liked this and decided to lay in the warm sunshine. Finally back in school the children listened to a story about a rabbit.

Pet and Animal Care - Week 2 Friday 9th May 2014

This week the children learned all about dogs and how to care for them.

Mrs Coburn brought her mum's little dog called Mollie she was really well behaved and loved all the attention that the children gave her!

They were reminded about personal hygiene while handling animals and how to carefully handle them.

The children look at all the things that Mollie had in her dog bag there was; a brush for grooming, toothbrush, water bowl, dog biscuits and food, dog basket/bed, poop bags, a lead and a dog deodorant! The children helped to groom Mollie and they gave her some water and a tasty dog biscuit.

They had a chance to build a kennel for a dog using lego and practise these skills on the toy dogs.

After that the children went outside and took it in turns to walk Mollie on her lead, it was great fun!

Finally they went  back inside and listened to a story about a dog and had a drink.

This week the children learned how to look after and handle pets. They were really lucky to meet Buzz and Muffin the Rainbow room gerbils. They held the gerbils really carefully, helped to change the food and water and finally cleaned out their cage. They were taught about the importance of personal hygiene while handling the gerbils. They all remembered to keep their hands away from their mouths and wash their hands thoroughly after changing the cage.

They all did really well and they now know how to care for Buzz and Muffin.

Pet and Animal Care - Week 6 Friday 11th April 2014

This was the final day of the course and the children were really lucky to have Helen Pickard from the Blue Cross visit with her Spanish Water dog, Rosa.

Helen talked to the children about the work of the Blue Cross and reminded them how to be a good pet owner. The children took it in turns to help Rosa do tricks such as walking on her hind legs, tuning in circles and giving her paw! She was a very clever dog. We ended the session by talking about our favourite memories from the six week course.

Pet and Animal Care Week 1 Friday 7th March 2014.

The children's first day at university started with a visit from a vet called Steve Kirby from Ashlands Vets. He brought his dog Alfie with  him to meet the children. Alfie was very well behaved and loved the children making a fuss of him. Steve let the children listen to Alfie's heart beats. He talked about the different people who worked at the vets and the jobs they did.
He talked about how to keep our pets happy and healthy. Sometimes animals have to go to the vet hospital to have an operations. The children dressed up in the operating gowns. Steve showed them some of the parasites animals can pick up e.g. Ticks, worms and fleas...he brought some for the children to look at. At the end the children asked sensible questions e.g. Do the animals get scared when they have to go to the vets? At the end because the children had been so good and had learnt such a lot Steve presented the children with a very special certificate....a very proud moment for all the children.  If you have a pet and want to learn more check out where you can look at the newsletters and see a photograph of Steve with Alfie.
